Description | This banded sample contains hematite and maghemite, both Fe2O3. Hematite is one of the most common minerals. The color of red sandstone, and most other red rocks, is due to hematite. This specimen contains reddish hematite altering with more metallic looking maghemite, a form of hematite with a different atomic arrangement than normal. |
