DescriptionHematite, Fe2O3 (iron oxide), may have any of a number of different colors. This sample is metallic steel gray to iron black. Samples that are especially sparkly and metallic are called specular hematite. Many samples of hematite are orange, red or brown, and a hint of those colors can be seen here. Hematite has historically been an important ore of iron. This specimen is 9 cm across.
