TitleHematite
DescriptionHematite, Fe2O3 (iron oxide), is sometimes mined as an ore for iron. It is found in many guises, many of which are rust red, like this specimen. It can also be brown, orange, gray or black, and sometimes is metallic silver. The red, orange and brown colors occur when the iron in the hematite begins to rust.
