Title | Arsenopyrite, pyrite and quartz from Gold Hills, Utah |
Description | This specimen (10 cm across) contains arsenopyrite (FeAsS), pyrite (FeS2) and quartz (SiO2). The pyrite is conspicuously gold and metallic, the aresenopyrite is drab gray, and the quartz is whitish. Pyrite is an ore mineral for iron, and arsenopyrite is a major ore of arsenic. Quartz, typically is gangue (meaning it is a valueless mineral found with ore minerals). Arsenopyrite sometimes indicates the presence of gold, and so when it is present it gets miners excited. |
