TitleSphalerite from Montana
DescriptionThis sample, 7.5 cm across, is a classic example of the brown “resinous” variety of sphalerite. Sphalerite has composition (Zn,Fe)S. It can have many different appearances; the variety shown here is one of the easiest to identify. The luster (termed resinous), which may resemble hardened tree sap, is unknown in other minerals. Sphalerite is the most important zinc ore. Sphalerite is a rather common mineral; major deposits occur throughout the world. Some of the most notable occurrences are Trepca, former Yugoslavia; Alston Moor, England; Binnental, Wallis, Switzerland; and Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.
