DescriptionCinnabar, HgS (mercury sulfide), is a colorful mineral generally having a distinctive red or purple color. Large euhedral cyrstals are uncommon - it typically is very fine grained or massive. The cinnabar seen here is in a sandstone; the field of view is only about 5 cm across. Cinnabar is an important ore mineral for mercury.
