DescriptionCinnabar is a (normally) red to violet mineral having composition mercury sulfide, HgS. It is an important ore mineral of mercury that may be deposited in veins and also in crusts and lenses associated with near recent volcanic rocks and hot springs. Here the host is mostly quartz. This specimen is about 8 cm across.
