TitlePyrrhotite with garnet, quartz and biotite, from Thompson, Manitoba
DescriptionThe gold/brass colored mineral that dominates this sample is pyrrhotite. The pyrrhotite occupies a vein in a garnet-quartz-biotite rock that split open along the vein. The garnet (red and glassy looking), quartz (white), and biotite (black) can be most clearly seen in the upper left part of the specimen. Pyrrhotite, Fe1-xS, is closely related to pyrite, FeS2, but has a distinctly different atomic arrangement. Additionally, pyrrhotite's color is subdued and often described as being “bronze” but pyrite (fools gold) has a brighter more yellow metallic appearance. The sample shown, from the mining district near Thompson, Manitoba, is about 9 cm across.
